Our contest "Envy, Neighbor"

From the editor:We decided to keep the writing style unchanged. This summer cottage took second place in our competition. The photos were taken by the owners of the intelligent and inquisitive Lyusha. Hello, dear editorial staff of "FloraPrice" magazine and readers! I have to write to you instead of my owners. I am a Drathaar hunting dog. My owners are not lazy at all, but they just never wrote anywhere, and our plot (6 acres), it seems to me, is very nice and everyone likes it. The main thing is that everything is done by the hands of the owners themselves. The plot is 14 years old, the owner himself put the house together with a friend (I know this from stories, since I am only 8 years old), and then for many more years he completed the construction himself - and the utility block, and the garage, and the fence, and the porch - and that's all, what we have made of wood or iron. But the hostess loves to tinker with cement and stone (can you imagine ?!), and she herself made a path from the waste of beautiful polished stone across the entire site. And four years ago we all built a pond together, and now I often lie nearby, watching the frogs. Almost all of our territory is occupied by a lawn, and this suits me very much - you can run, lie down, roll around and even play ball (which, however, is not very encouraged). There are also many flowers in spring, summer and autumn - something is blooming all the time. But I will not dwell on flowers, because sometimes because of them I have a little trouble - you will run after someone else's cat ... and lo! "Do you understand what I mean? And last year the owner built a bench!" All the neighbors went to look and take pictures on it. The owner and me it was nice. We come to our garden in winter to feed the birds. They flock as soon as we come to the house. And they know me and are not afraid, I’m a real hunting dog and I know who is hu. Perhaps, I chatted. Greetings from my dear owner - Arkady Gennadievich Shurygin (he and the owner - Sofya Arsenievna Masyutina - were geologists, and now both retired, which suits me very much) Best regards, your Lyusha.

How to grow pine from a cone.

My friend, having read on the internet about the opportunity to grow a pine tree at home, caught fire with this idea. I have nowhere to go, I had to support. That's what came out of it.
This year, the "harvest" of cones seems to be unsuccessful. Show in full. My wife and I went to a forest belt, next to our town, there are a lot of last year's cones, but all are open, or it was too lazy to look. And on the pine itself, they are still green, not open. I had to collect them.
Now I had to study on the internet how to get seeds.
All instructions say that in order for the seeds to germinate in the future, a temperature of no more than 45 degrees is needed to open the cone. I obviously have more on batteries (because not central heating, but my own boiler room) and again used a dryer for vegetables. The bumps opened.
I extracted seeds from them.
I checked for quality - I let the seeds go into a glass of water. Throw out those that surfaced. those that drowned, put them on wet gauze (here you need to make sure that it is always wet).
They lay there for 10 days and lo and behold. sprouted.
Planted in a pot.
Wood shavings to keep the ground moist longer.
Now we will observe.

Sun-dried tomatoes "VKUSNYASHKA"

Tomatoes - 5 kg
Dry herbs - to taste (I take a collection of herbs, ready-made - "Provencal or Italian herbs")
Black pepper to taste. Show in full.
Garlic - 8-10 cloves.
Olive / vegetable oil - 200-400 ml

After all the preparations for the winter, like everyone else, I probably had tomatoes left to ripen. I don't feel like salt anymore, we have done enough juice, ketchup and sauces. Now you can prepare delicacies.
For drying (drying) it is better to use small fleshy varieties, for me it is the "Cream" variety.
The tomatoes must be washed and wiped dry. Cut lengthwise into 4 pieces. Spread out on a baking sheet at a distance from each other.

Since I have a fruit and vegetable dryer, I used to dry in it.
But you can also use the oven, (I did this before), although the drying mode will be different. Preheat the oven to 100 0 С, put the baking sheet in the "convection" mode / if not then open the oven door /. Dry for 2-2.5 hours. Then reduce to 80 0 С and dry until tender, periodically checking readiness.
There is a significant disadvantage in drying in the oven - all the moisture that evaporates in your kitchen.
It can be dried both with seeds (in Italy, for example, they are dried only with seeds) or without, removing them with a teaspoon, but this is a long process. I didn't bother. I will warn you right away that tomatoes without seeds dry faster.
Seasonings, black pepper and salt can be sprinkled directly on the slices, or when ready. This time, I added seasoning after drying.
I set the dryer to 60 degrees. And set to dry. I got 6 baking sheets. I put it in the evening at 18.00. In the morning at 8.00 I got the dried ones.

It is advisable to pre-sterilize the banks.
I laid them in layers - herbs (you can do without them at all, if you don't like them), garlic (finely chopped), tomatoes, pepper, salt, herbs, garlic, tomatoes. Then fill with oil. Heat the oil on the stove. but do not bring to a boil. Pour so that the tomatoes disappear. Close the lid. When it cools down, put the refrigerator in storage.

You can use it as an independent dish (appetizer) or add it to salads, pizza, soups, sandwiches. For tasting, tomatoes should stand in the refrigerator for at least a couple of days, be saturated with the smell of herbs and garlic.
It turns out very tasty.

For an urban person, a garden and a vegetable garden are not so much a source of food as an opportunity to communicate with nature, relax and relieve stress from a crowded city. A lot of effort and money is spent on their device, improvement, decoration. Even ordinary vegetable crops can serve as decoration. There is even a special term for this - an ornamental garden. In regions with a cold or too hot climate, with a high level of groundwater, it makes sense to make high beds. They will protect from heat / cold, prevent the horse system from getting wet. The harvest will be more abundant and often earlier.

In general, greenhouses and greenhouses are made in more northern regions to obtain an earlier harvest or for its normal ripening. They are very similar in design, differ in size. Greenhouses allow you to process plants without bending, that is, you can stand in it at full height and work at the same time.

For normal plant growth, watering is necessary. Everything would be fine, but it takes a lot of time and effort. Therefore, they try to automate the process. This is a costly event, but nothing at all: the water is turned on on schedule. Less costly, but no less effective - drip irrigation. It allows you to save water and energy, since water is supplied practically without human intervention. You just need to monitor the presence of water and open / close the taps in time.

A beautiful garden without hassle

March. I declare the summer season open! It's time to go to the country house and try to make your beloved a little more beautiful and well-groomed this year a vegetable garden without hassle.

The personal plot is an outlet for the Russian people. And even if for someone running a country economy is seen as "hunched over summer residents in the sweat of their brows heap their plots", for me it is always a pleasant pastime. Let's consider the idea of creating ornamental garden without hassle.

Useful and edible decorations

The French were the first to come up with the ingenious idea to create a garden, a vegetable garden, and a flower garden on one site. In order to separate rose bushes, garden beds with radishes and carrots and not allow trees to let excessive shade, enterprising Europeans created decorative trellises and trellises, thanks to which the landscape composition looked organic and whole. Let us and we, asking ourselves the question: how to make a garden decorative, we will follow in the footsteps of the sophisticated French.

Where to start a garden without hassle?

In order to set up a decorative garden on the site, you need to find a place for it, preferably away from the car parking, restroom and waste storage areas. Be sure to keep in mind that the place under it must be sunny. No shady side and windswept territory! And even if your site is tilted, this is not a reason to give up your dream - you can make a decorative garden with your own hands in a cascade style using stone or wooden props.

Unlike the usual vegetable garden, where each vegetable-berry grows in its strictly measured garden, the ornamental garden is distinguished by a variety of shapes and sizes, a riot of colors and a wealth of plants planted in a joint planting.

So, if the area of your site is not presented in the form of unplowed land, where the summer resident's foot has not yet stepped, you can create a garden in a checkerboard or chaotic manner without much hassle, while observing the classic rules for its creation:

  • the beds are in the past, but in our decorative garden without hassle their place was taken by flower beds. Planting of plants, as the French say, is carried out by "courtine" - clumps, separately growing medium-sized massifs. This means that sunflowers and corn, as the tallest plants, should be planted in the background, tomatoes and peppers, as plants of medium height, in the center, and carrots and radishes on the edge, diluting the overall picture with thin gravel paths.
  • any materials can be used as dividers, both ready-made structures: gratings, trellises, and natural ones: stones, gravel, logs, bricks. If the area has a perfectly flat surface, useful aromatic herbs and flowers, such as various basilicas, calendula, nasturtiums and marigolds, can be used to separate the plants.

  • To make the ornamental garden truly "hassle-free", it was always available for watering, weeding, harvesting, the size of each bed should not be wider than one and a half meters. As for the tracks between them, their width does not exceed half a meter.
  • Experienced summer residents know that it is of great importance orientation of ridges... The most suitable option would be longitudinal sowing of seeds, carried out in a direction from north to south.
  • Of great importance in reducing the amount of hassle is soil mulching between landings. Mulching gives a huge benefit to the garden: the number of weeds is reduced, the structure of the earth is improved, and most importantly, the moisture that is so necessary in the summer heat is retained.
  • Also important crop rotation of crops in the garden, because only in this way the health of the garden soil will be preserved, which means that you will have less trouble. If summer or the growth rate of vegetables allows, plant changes can be carried out several times per season, bringing novelty to the ornamental garden. And then, by next year, your main vegetables can return to their place without causing the hassle of thinking over and planning the site annually.
  • Ideas for a decorative garden can be varied, from variations in the style of the legendary gardens of Babylon to hobbit villages. Use your imagination, sketch on paper, and bring your vision to life in your garden. And I can say with confidence that the scenery can be alive and, moreover, the garden will become less troublesome!

    Effect # 5. Simple geometry

When pruning plants, very often we try to create too complex structures. Or vice versa - limit yourself to three spherical plants in a row. The way out of this situation is simple geometry, which implies the presence of 1-2 large plants and 2-3 small, undersized plants in one composition.

How to make your garden beautiful

Building a garden is fun and creative work. First, choose a place for your garden. You need to select the trees you want to plant. Basically, these should be trees that are not whimsical for the Russian winter (such as apple, pear, plum, cherry). Plant four apple trees at each corner of the garden, and around you can plant either cherries or plums, you can stir. When everything grows, the cherry and plum bushes will resemble a fence. You planted apple trees in the corners, and at the edges you planted artisanal berries, you have a place in the middle.

You need to put something special there, it should not be a tree or a bush. It should be something decorative and special (such as a pond, fountain, or homemade monument). You can try to build a fountain, for this you will need to buy some building materials. You will need to buy several meters of hose, natural stones, and a pump. Now you need to start the construction of the decorative fountain itself. Fold large natural stones in the shape you want.

Once you have decided how to place the stones, you need to drill a through hole in the topmost stone. Insert a hose into this hole through which the water will flow. You can make a hole at the very top of the stone, then water will flow throughout the stone. Dig a ditch around the fountain, make concrete fences there. This groove is needed to drain the water. If you do not do such an installation, then it will be constantly dirty around the fountain. Now you need to connect the hose to the pump and turn on the water. If you wish, you can make the water light or sprinkle the fountain with multi-colored glass stones.

To prevent extraneous plants from growing in the future garden, you need to plant special grass for the lawn. You need to plow the entire garden, then plant this herb. Such grass looks beautiful, and it grows so densely that it will not miss any other plant.

If you wish, you can make the garden even more beautiful by installing a stone path in it. Stone paths are very common in gardens, but not everyone can afford the luxury. You can make a path from artificial or natural stone. Artificial stone is several times cheaper than natural, so it is more profitable to use artificial stone.

Let's get to work. You will need to dig a ditch, along the width and length of the future stone path. You need to make sure that after a few years grass does not sprout through your stones. To do this, you need to burn out the roots of the plants. Pour gasoline over the entire ditch and set it on fire, wait until the fire is completely extinguished. Remember, excessive use of gasoline can start a fire. You will also need a construction tarpaulin fabric, such a fabric will not let the plants through even after decades. Lay this fabric over the entire diameter of the groove. Now you need a special artificial stone.

You need to put the stones on the cement, after the complete installation of the path, use the clogging of the cracks with sand. Spread the sand in small piles all over the path. Begin to sweep the sand along the path with a broom, it will clog all the cracks. Remove the remaining sand outside the path. But such a path can also be made of patterned white bricks. White brick is cheaper than natural stone, but it crumbles quickly if the path is roughly handled. So take a brick and place it on the cement. The brick can be installed and alternating layers. You put one row with one end down, and the other row you put the other way around. This will make the track look nicer.

The cheapest way to make a garden path is with cement and slate debris. Slate fragments can be purchased near construction factories. They cost like construction waste, they will not cost you much. Fill half of the ditch with cement mortar, and fill the other half with slate fragments. When the concrete is almost dry, you will need to trample the slate down so that it completely sinks into the concrete. Such a path is certainly not made of stone, but it looks very good.

Trees when planning a garden: the best plants for the middle lane

The best plants for the garden are simple and hardy. Exotics and rarities, experimenting with novelties is a very exciting experience. However, hobby for them leads to significant costs, as well as inevitable plant losses. After all, this is a roulette wheel - to buy something new and find out whether it endures our climate or not.

If the virus of collecting has passed you, but there is a goal to create a beautiful environment for life with minimal reasonable costs, the approach to the plant component should be different. You don't need experiments, you need results. The best perennial plants for the garden are trees and shrubs that have already been tested, proven and resistant in the conditions of our site. Such plants develop well, require minimal care, and hardly get sick. They give a predictable result, which is exactly what we need!

If you live in the country all year round, the importance of the stability of unpretentious perennial plants for the garden is even higher, because few people want to admire the shelter for six months.

Endurance, simplicity and provenness are especially important for woody ones. After all, they form the backbone of the garden, form its appearance. Imagine that you planted an exotic tree at your own peril and risk, several winters were mild, and it grew decently, fitting into the composition. But a harsh winter happens, and our tree freezes over to the level of snow. The composition disappears, and the void in the place of the tree is like a lost tooth. And the replacement will not grow up soon. Reliable species and varieties will not let you down so, and will only grow and delight more and more from year to year.

You can also look at old plantings in parks or private gardens. Anything that has been successfully growing for 20 years or more can be considered ideal plants in terms of resistance. Just do not forget to note in what conditions the specimen that struck you is located: in the shade or in the sun, in a dry or damp place.

What usually catches the eye first in the garden? Especially ladies? Perennials. Bright, profusely blooming. Phloxes, peonies, daylilies, roses - everything that blooms magnificently are especially popular and do not cease to be fashionable. But close your eyes and imagine a rectangular bed of peonies in the middle of a weed field without a tree-like environment. Is it beautiful?

This means that, despite the fact that they are the first to catch the eye, the main ones in the garden are not brightly flowering perennials. They are more like costume details, a brooch, a fashionable scarf or a handbag. In fact, the garden is formed by trees and shrubs, conifers and deciduous, evergreen and deciduous. They create volume, their trunks and branches set the rhythm, graphics, they delimit zones, fill the space. Among the unpretentious plants for the garden, there can be both beautiful-flowering and decorative-leaved crops of various sizes and crown habit. The woody component is especially important in winter. Just think: from 12 months of the year for 6 months, nothing blooms in the middle lane! It's half a year! If the garden is your daily habitat not only in the warm season, trees become even more important, because it is they and only them that you will admire for 5-6 months a year - in winter. No phlox or rose blooms for so long!

Therefore, give priority to winter-hardy, hardy plants, which not only and not so much bloom luxuriously, but are also good for something else for a long time. Among the best plants for a garden in the middle lane are turf trees, maples and conifers. Dogwoods have the brightest color of shoots in winter, many maples color amazingly in autumn, and conifers give greenery in winter and in the off-season, in the grayest periods.

Look at the photo of how to set up a garden on the site and what trees to plant on the site:
