Hypoestes

Hypoestes

Hypoestes is an evergreen plant belonging to the Acanthus family. Scientists consider the rainforests of Madagascar and South Africa to be the birthplace of hypoesthesia.

The flower cup of the hypoestes is always covered with a bract, from which it got its name (a combination of two Greek words literally translates as "under" and "house").

Hypoestes grows both in the form of shrubs and a herbaceous plant. Its size is small, but abundant flowering. The leaves are ovoid in shape, opposite each other, both smooth and rough at the edges, green. The high decorativeness of this plant is associated with its beautiful leaves: specks of various colors are scattered on a green background - from white to red.

Hypoesthesia care at home

Location and lighting

At any time of the year, hypoesthesia needs good lighting. The plant should be shaded out of direct sunlight. In winter and autumn, short daylight hours do not allow the plant to receive the required amount of lighting, therefore it is important to use additional fluorescent lamps or phytolamps. With a low level of illumination, the leaves of hypoesthesia will lose their decorative effect - spots will disappear from them.

Temperature

Hypoestes does not tolerate fluctuations in ambient temperature, as well as drafts. In spring and summer, the optimum room temperature should vary from 22 to 25 degrees, in winter it should be at least 17 degrees.

Air humidity

Rainforests, as the birthplace of hypoesthesia, have caused hypoesthesia to constantly need air with high levels of humidity. It is important to regularly spray the leaves with warm, settled water. For additional moisture, the pot with the plant is placed in a pallet with wet expanded clay or moss, while the bottom of the slide should not touch moisture, otherwise root decay may occur.

Watering

Hypoestes is watered abundantly in spring and summer and often as the topsoil dries up. The earth ball should not completely dry out, otherwise the plant will shed its leaves. Starting in autumn, watering is gradually reduced and reduced to a minimum in winter - water only when a couple of days have passed since the top layer of the substrate dries out.

The soil

The optimal soil composition for growing hypoesthesia: leafy soil, humus, peat and sand in a ratio of 2: 1: 1: 1, with a pH of 5-6. A good drainage layer must be placed on the bottom of the pot.

Top dressing and fertilizers

In order to keep the bright color of the leaves all the time, hypoesthesia is regularly fed with fertilizers with a high potassium content from spring to autumn. The frequency of top dressing is once a month.

Transfer

Hypoestes needs an annual transplant in the spring. The plant is considered old after about 2-3 years, so at about this frequency it is important to renew the shrub with new young shoots.

Pruning

The plant can be given a neat decorative look by pinching the shoots. By pinching the shoots, they begin to branch better.

Reproduction of hypoesthesia

Hypoestes can be propagated both by cuttings-shoots and by seeds. The seeds are planted in the ground in March, the container is covered with a transparent bag or glass and left in this state at a temperature of about 13-18 degrees. The greenhouse is periodically ventilated and moistened with an earthen lump. The first shoots appear quite quickly, and after 3-4 months it will be possible to form the basis for a future adult plant from the seedlings.

It is possible to propagate hypoestes by cuttings all year round. At least 2-3 nodes should remain on one cutting when cut. The cutting takes root both in water and directly in a previously prepared substrate at a temperature of 22-24 degrees.

Diseases and pests

Pests rarely infect the leaves of hypoesthesia, but it can lose its leaves from an excess of moisture in the soil, dry air, sudden temperature changes, and drafts. If there is a lack of light, then the leaves will lose their decorative effect, and the shoots will become thin.

Popular types of hypoesthesia

Hypoestes blood red - an evergreen shrub no more than 0.5 m high. The width of the leaves is about 3-4 cm, the length is 5-8 cm. The shape is ovoid, the leaf itself is dark green, the spots on it are red. It blooms with small flowers, collected in a corolla inflorescence.

Leaf grate hypoestes - evergreen dwarf shrub, similar in appearance to red hypoesthesia. The leaves are soft to the touch, purple-red in color. It blooms with single lavender-colored flowers.

My indoor plants Hypoestes

Please tell us about the hypoesthes plant and its care.

Gipestes or hypoestes (Hipoestes) - a shrub with beautiful variegated leaves. In indoor floriculture, two types are widespread: blood-red hypestes (differs in dark green leaves with many pink and white-pink spots, small purple flowers in the leaf axils) and leafy hypestes (soft leaves are red-purple, white-green, and single flowers with pink or red dots or spots on the plant). Hypestheses are kept in a bright place with shade from direct hot sunlight. Without sufficient lighting, the leaves lose their attractiveness. In summer, the plant is watered abundantly and sprayed, the air humidity near the plant is maintained from March to August, the hypestes are slightly fertilized 2 times a month. In winter, watering is reduced and the optimum temperature of the content is 18 degrees. For planting hypoesthesia, a loose soil mixture is used (sod humus peat soil and sand in equal proportions). For lush branching in hypoestes, pinch the tops of the shoots, hypoestes propagates by cuttings in warm soil and seeds (the fruit is a capsule, ripe seeds are scattered).

Features of plant care

Lighting

Hypoestes is a fairly light-loving flower, but in addition to this, direct sunlight can harm it. At home, he needs a little shading. In winter, the plant definitely needs an additional light source, you can use fluorescent lamps. By the appearance of the leaves, you can guess whether the flower needs more lighting or not. If the pink spots on the leaves begin to disappear, then it is safe to say that the flower is experiencing a lack of light.

Temperature

In the wild, hypoestes grows in tropical climates, so at home the temperature should be 22-24 C. In winter, the optimal temperature is 18 C. Like many indoor plants, hypoestes is afraid of drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations.

Humidity

Hypoestes prefers high humidity. You can maintain the humidity in the room by systematically spraying the leaves of the plant. Spraying is strongly recommended only with soft water.

Watering the plant

In spring and summer, hypoesthesia should be watered very abundantly. You can determine when a plant needs watering on the top layer of the soil: if it has already dried up to a depth of 2 cm, then you can safely water it. If you miss this moment, and there is no moisture left in the pot, the plant will quickly shed all the leaves. In the fall and winter, you need to slightly reduce the frequency of watering, but you still need to periodically monitor the soil.

Top dressing

You need to start feeding the plant from the beginning of spring and finish only closer to November. The most optimal amount of top dressing per month is 2 times. Fertilizers should contain a lot of potassium.

Plant transplant

Hypoesthes can be transplanted only in the spring and once a year. New soil can be purchased at the store, but some growers prefer to make it themselves. This will require leafy earth, humus, sand and peat. Leafy land needs to be taken twice as many other components. Drainage for the plant is also necessary.

Hypoestes

• perennial herbaceous plants, shrubs or shrubs common in Africa and Madagascar
• in culture 2-3 species

Genus Hypoestes (Hypoestes) includes 104 species and belongs to the Acanthus family (Acanthaceae). The natural habitat of these plants is the tropical and subtropical zone of the Indian Ocean coast and the island of Madagascar. This genus is related to the families Fittonius and Justice.

The genus name is derived from two Greek words - hypo - under, estia - house, indicates the presence of bracts that cover the calyx of the flower. There is also a common name - Polka Dot Plant, which hypoesthesia received for speckled leaves.

These are herbaceous plants or shrubs with cystoliths - deposits of calcium carbonate of various shapes in special crystalline cells. Leaves are opposite, ovate, pointed, up to 7-10 cm long, smoothly tapering to a petiole at the base, whole or serrated along the edge. The main background of the leaves is green or deep purple, dots, strokes or spots of different sizes of white, yellow or pink are scattered on it. Flowers are collected in apical, sometimes axillary inflorescences - spikelets or panicles of spikelets, or cymose inflorescences. The inflorescence is equipped with 4 bracts, located in pairs - the inner pair often merges with the outer one, forming a single veil, at the base of which there are 1-3 flowers. The calyx is hidden under the veil, small, indistinct or membranous, with 5 equal lobes. Corolla pink, purple or whitish, with an almost cylindrical tube widened into a narrow throat, turned 180 degrees, ending in a double-lipped lower lip (in the upper position) shallow 3-lobed upper lip (in the lower position) shallow 2-lobed. Shares of the limb are equal. Stamens 2, attached at the apex of the corolla tube, protrude from the corolla orifice; the pistil protrudes from the pharynx. The fruit is a reticulated capsule with 2-4 smooth or colored seeds.

Two closely related species are cultivated -

Leaf grate hypoestes (Hypoestes phyllostachya) - comes from the shady tropical rainforests of the island of Madagascar.

It is a dense, compact evergreen shrub up to 30 cm in height and width, with bright pink or white leaves, as if splattered with pink or purple paint. Leaves are opposite, oval, pointed, soft, on petioles 2-4 cm long. The most common type has green leaves with pink spots, although these can range from white to pink and red. The spots on the underside of the leaves are much lighter, often white. May bloom in small, single, pink or purple axillary flowers that resemble honeysuckle flowers. The fruit is a polyspermous capsule.

Commonly called the Freckle Face.

It has many cultivars, the most famous of which are:

  • Carmina - with bright red spots on the leaves.
  • Confetti - smaller in size and has many spots of different shades on the leaves, resembling confetti.
  • Pink brocade, Pink dot - with pink spots on the leaves.
  • Purpuriana - with purple leaves.
  • Splash - has large spots of pink, white or red on the green background of the leaf.
  • Wit - with marbled white leaves.

Hypoestes blood red (Hypoestes sanguinolenta) - grows in shady places in tropical rain forests on the island of Madagascar.

Densely branched shrub up to 50 cm tall. Leaves are narrow ovate, 5-8 cm long and 3-4 cm wide, slightly wavy along the edge, entire, dark green, with clear purple-red veins and small red spots. The flowers are small, light purple, with a white throat.

Florist reviews about hypoesthesia

I also grew hypoestes from seeds (“Polka Dot” variety). There were just bright pink spots, but then she knew little about this plant and when it bloomed (small lilac tubular flowers) did not pluck out the buds. There is little decorativeness from flowers, but the plant itself is very difficult to preserve after flowering (well, I did not succeed, unfortunately). Now I want to sow the rest of the seeds. A very cute and unusual plant.

According to my observations, hypoesthesia is extremely hardy and unpretentious. The only drawback of this plant, perhaps, is the high requirements for illumination. In insufficient light, it stretches strongly, and the leaves lose their bright color. But even with good lighting, hypoesthesia will have to be constantly pinched and trimmed.Another property of hypoesthesia is the ability to reproduce uncontrollably. Get ready for the fact that new hypoesthesia will be found in pots of many of your plants at a distance of up to 1.5-2 m. Flowers in hypoesthesia are small and are formed in very large quantities. So removing them regularly is a separate job.

What can I tell you about hypoesthesia: in general, an unpretentious plant, loves diffused lighting, timely watering, every day or every other day I turn the pot the other side (so that it does not grow one-sided) and pinch through 2 internodes. , it bloomed anyway) so I just cut off the stem. She planted the cuttings immediately in cups of earth (poured a little) and in a bag. Probably a week stood, all rooted with a bang. I hope someone will find my experience useful.

Hypoestes is very beautiful and simple) Disadvantages: Do not forget to water) I am happy with the flower, not very demanding and aesthetic)

No matter how much I removed the flowers, hypoestes still bloomed persistently, well, let me think. The leaves became noticeably smaller, and after that, in the fall, it completely wilted. Quite intuitively, she cut everything to the root and left it occasionally watering. Later, he released new shoots. And in the spring I already cut it out, having received a fresh bush. And also hypoesthesia stretches if there is not enough light. It will be beautiful if you constantly pinch it.

Hypoestes is an extremely useful plant. Scientists think so. The brightly colored leaves of this flower contain a lot of phytoncides. This means that hypoesthesia works like an air filter, destroying harmful impurities in the room where he lives. In addition, hypoesthesia does an excellent job of being a color therapist. From its variegated foliage, you can create magnificent paintings that will raise the most decadent mood. The conclusion suggests itself: if you want not to get sick and enjoy life, surround yourself at home and at work with multi-colored hypoesthetics.
