Do-it-yourself stationary brick grill: we equip a picnic area

Warm days are coming and summer residents are in a hurry to their plots. The time for spring worries is coming. But in the general hustle and bustle it is important to feel all the charm of awakening nature, to breathe in the clean air, devoid of city smog and burning. Work is work, but we already devote a whole week to it, and trips to the dacha should, first of all, be a pleasure. Any trip to nature with us is accompanied by traditional barbecue. So why not build a brick brazier on the site with your own hands? It can always be used for its intended purpose. After all, the one who knows how to have a good rest, and will work with soul!

Picnic area zoning

When we just have an idea of how to make a brazier out of bricks, we should immediately mentally tie this structure to the area. Both the size and appearance of the building may depend on the place where it will be located.

General site requirements are simple:

  • the site must be flat;
  • take into account the wind rose so that cooking smoke does not interfere with neighbors, does not get into the recreation area or the house and does not strangle the cook;
  • the proximity of the site to the house is necessary, because it is easier to provide it with water and light, and besides, you do not have to carry dishes and food far away.

It is worth planning the entire picnic area right away.

The picnic area in the country house should not be overloaded with structures. The brick barbecue itself, a food stand, a comfortable bench and a portable table are enough

A brazier is not even a barbecue, where a pipe is necessarily present in the design of the stove. It is an open and simple structure. However, there are also complex buildings that have not one work surface, but two, located on either side of the brazier. The combination model can include an oven, smokehouse and grill. If water is supplied, a sink is also needed.

The simplest option is when a brick brazier is made in the form of a skeleton, in which there are a brazier and a grate for meat or stops for skewers. However, it will be inconvenient without a work surface: there is nowhere to put the dishes, products and spices that are used in the process of preparing barbecue. Therefore, it also needs to be foreseen.

Each of the presented braziers is not overloaded with functions, but the one that has a work surface is still a little more convenient

Materials required for construction

In principle, no drawings for simple brick barbecues are needed, except for an accurate calculation of the need for materials. Use a dimensional sketch to help you navigate.

For the construction you will need:

  • cement;
  • slaked lime;
  • reinforcing bars or reinforcing mesh;
  • wire to reinforce brickwork;
  • sand;
  • metal corners;
  • heat-resistant brick.

Where the brick will not be exposed to strong heating, an expensive heat-resistant brick can be changed to a regular red one. The brazier will need a metal tray and grate. Do not forget about the tiles that we will use as a tabletop.

We'll have to prepare two types of mortar: for the foundation and for the masonry. You can make your work easier and use a ready-made mixture to prepare the masonry mortar.

We arrange the foundation of the structure

It is a mistake to believe that it is enough to tamp the site tightly, fill it with rubble and lay it out with paving slabs, in order to consider the base for the barbecue ready. Any movement of the ground can lead to the destruction of the structure. It will be a pity for the time and materials spent. Therefore, let's not rush and fill in a solid foundation.

We choose a small but functional structure, for which the base is 120x120cm. will suffice. We mark the site prepared for construction work with pegs and twine. We dig a hole of the indicated dimensions and a depth of 25 cm. We install the formwork, into which we pour a solution prepared at the rate of 1 part of cement, three parts of sand.

The foundation provides the strength of the building as a whole, so there is no need to rush during its construction: it will not be ready earlier than two weeks from the date of pouring

It is imperative to reinforce the base. For this purpose, you can use reinforcing bars or reinforcing mesh. If we choose a mesh, then it will have to be laid twice. First, fill the solution one third of the height of the base, then place the mesh layer, then fill the base another third and line another layer of mesh, after which we fill the base to its full size.

If the rods are placed in the base, then they are laid after half of the base is poured. Three rods 100-105 cm long are evenly laid out, and then the rest of the volume is poured. So that subsequently rainwater flows freely from the walls of the barbecue, you can make a platform with a slight (1 cm) slope. In order for the foundation to gain strength, it is left alone for two weeks.

First row of masonry

If we want to build a brazier simply, but quickly and accurately, we need to make a kind of fitting. To do this, lay a row of bricks dry on the foundation ready for further work. This preliminary estimate allows you to use only halves and whole blocks in the future. If the grate and pallet were prepared by us in advance, you need to take into account their exact dimensions in the future construction. The line of the future masonry is outlined, fixed and will serve as a binding guideline for us.

The first row of bricks must be laid out for trying on dry, but taking into account the fact that there will be a solution between the bricks

Brick is hygroscopic: it absorbs moisture easily. If it is not previously prepared for the upcoming work, then it can absorb all the moisture from the masonry mortar. The structure will turn out to be fragile. To prevent this from happening, the brick should be well wetted the day before work. It is either filled with water in containers, or well doused with garden hoses. Before starting work, the bricks must be wet on the inside and dry on the outside.

We prepare masonry mortar at the rate of 1 part of cement, 3 parts of sand and a quarter of slaked lime. In consistency, the masonry mortar should resemble thick sour cream. It remains to check all the measurements once again and lay the prepared brick on the masonry mortar strictly in the order outlined in advance. The space between the bricks should be well filled with mortar. To more reliably immerse the blocks in the solution, they should be tapped from above with a trowel handle or a hammer.

We build the base of the barbecue

The first row of the structure serves as a reference point for all subsequent ones, which will be stacked in a checkerboard pattern: each subsequent rad is displaced relative to the previous one by half a brick. You need to start laying out the row from the corner, and only then fill the side walls.

The masonry mortar must be distributed between the rows and do not forget about the side surfaces of the bricks, but carefully remove the excess

The planes of the structure must be regularly checked using a building level and a plumb line for this purpose. This must be done at least after three rows, otherwise the building may come out skewed. The masonry must be reinforced at the corner joints with metal wire. If you do not plan to add additional finishing to the barbecue, you can use a piece of garden hose to give the masonry joints a neat look.

Grid stops and roaster

For the base under the brazier, it is necessary to place metal corners or reinforcing rods between opposite walls. The base of the firebox made of bricks is laid on them. We have this role played by a metal pallet. The main condition is that the firebox is easily cleaned of ash.

In the area of the firebox, it is necessary to leave side gaps in the brickwork unfilled with mortar. This will allow air to enter the chamber. After all, without an inflow of oxygen, the process of fuel combustion is impossible.

The construction of the brazier and the installation of the tray, grate and table top are the finishing touches. The appearance of the structure and your impression of the work done depends on their quality.

The grille can be installed on metal rods that are pre-assembled into a brick wall, or on the protrusions of the brickwork itself. Such protrusions are formed if the bricks are not laid along, but across the wall. It is necessary that they protrude into the brazier to the same level.

Work surface arrangement

The tabletop should be in harmony with the overall appearance of the resulting stove and be easy to use. You can use sturdy floor or sidewalk tiles. It is important for the work surface that it is durable and washable.

The work is almost done, but experts advise two weeks to let your grill dry out before starting to use it.

If it was planned to bring water supply and drainage to the location of the barbecue, it is better to plan them in advance, because the pipes are easier to remove through the base. So they will be less noticeable, and the overall appearance of the structure will be more aesthetically pleasing. Lighting of the site will not be superfluous. In the fresh summer air, it is better to relax in the barbecue campaign in the evening, when it is not hot. Now you know how to quickly and easily build a brick brazier.

Diy brick grill

Portable light barbecues are good in nature, but near the house or in the country you want more convenience, and aesthetics. All this can be provided by brick barbecues. Due to the plasticity of the material, they can be small - occupy about one square space of the area, or there can be decent corner complexes with a hearth, a hob and even a sink and supplied water / sewage. Even a completely inexperienced bricklayer can lay out the simplest brick braziers with their own hands. One of these projects will be described in detail below. It can be used as a training mission before building something more serious.

Choosing a place for building a barbecue

The structure should not pose a danger to a residential building. Therefore, it is placed as far as possible and equipped with fire safety elements. Firewood must be stored in a closed chamber or at a sufficient distance from the barbecue, in a protected place. The structure is placed a few meters from the recreation area - a summer kitchen, a terrace or a gazebo. To protect against precipitation, a canopy can be erected over the barbecue. A table and several benches can be placed under it. If there is a garden, flower beds or a vegetable garden on the site, then you will need to protect them from temperature exposure: fruits and flowers will suffer in the first place. The brazier should be placed next to the path so that the approach to it is from both sides. Garbage cans are also kept at a distance. Another important point is to study the windy environment to avoid smoke entering the windows.

Why do you need to fill the foundation?

If you want the future brick brazier to please you for more than one year, you just need to take care of its foundation. Otherwise, you will waste time and money on the used material.
What should be the size of the foundation - it directly depends on the planned dimensions of the structure. If necessary, to make the process of building a barbecue from a brick easier with your own hands, you can watch the video and photo instructions on our website. It is likely that they will help you quickly cope with any task.

So, first you need to dig a pit. Then, at the edges of the pit, install the formwork, pour concrete there and reinforce the slab. This entire structure must be left alone for two weeks, until it completely hardens.

Well, after the foundation has completely hardened, it will be possible to begin the construction of a brick barbecue with your own hands.
