Storing apples in a thermobox

Such a storage place can be made independently and kept on the balcony throughout the entire winter period, regardless of whether the balcony is glazed or not. In such a box, a constant temperature required by the fruit will be maintained. It will become a reliable protection against sudden frosts.

To make it, you will need some materials:

  • 2 cardboard boxes of different sizes
  • Styrofoam approximately 5 centimeters thick
  • Any insulation (foam waste, wood shavings or sawdust, polyurethane foam or ordinary rags)

The boxes must be selected such that between the smaller and larger (when stacking one into the other) there is a gap of about fifteen centimeters. This gap is then tightly filled with the prepared insulation. The foam should be placed on the bottom of the smaller box, and the apples should be carefully placed on it until the container is full. Then the top of the box is closed and another layer of foam is placed on top. After that, it remains to close the large box and cover it with a thick warm cloth (for example, an old blanket).

This reliable and proven apple storage area has only one drawback - difficult access to the fruit.

Storing apples in paper

This method is not suitable for those who have harvested a huge harvest. It is ideal for those with fewer apples. Each apple is carefully and neatly wrapped in paper. This can be newspaper, napkins, plain white printing paper, and other options. Wrapped apples are placed in prepared wooden or plastic boxes, cardboard boxes.

Storing apples in polyethylene

For this method, plastic cling film is suitable, as well as bags of different sizes. You can stack fruits in different ways:

  • Spread the plastic wrap in the box so that the edges hang down. When the container is full to the top, you need to cover the top of the box with these hanging edges according to the "envelope" principle.
  • Each apple is placed in a small plastic bag and tied tightly. These small bags are folded into a large box and taken out to a cool place. It is advisable to keep the fruit in the cold for two hours before packing.
  • You can put apples in a large transparent plastic bag. A small cotton swab dipped in vinegar or alcohol should be left inside the bag. After that, the bag is tightly tied. Air should not penetrate inside.

  • You need to prepare a mixture of 500 grams of alcohol and 100 grams of propolis tincture. Each fruit is completely dipped in this mixture, and then allowed to dry well.
  • Get 2% calcium chloride solution from your pharmacy. Dip each apple in it for one minute.
  • Get a 5% salicylic acid solution from your pharmacy. Dip each apple in this solution for a few seconds.
  • Melt the beeswax or paraffin wax to a liquid state. Holding the apple by the tail, immerse it completely in this liquid, then let it dry well and send it to storage. Fruit processed in this way is best stored in boxes filled with sawdust.
  • Apples are stacked in prepared containers in layers. Each layer must be irradiated with a germicidal ultraviolet lamp for 30 minutes from a distance of 1.5 meters. This will prevent the development of diseases associated with rotting apples.

Apple lovers know full well that these fruits come in two main varieties - winter and summer. At the same time, a distinctive feature of winter apples is a rough and fairly thick skin and a weakly expressed bloom of wax. If you correctly collect, transport and store winter varieties of these delicious fruits, you can enjoy them throughout the cold season.

But how to do it right? How to store apples at home in winter? Everyone who has ever asked this question immediately began to sort out the options - where, how is it better: in the apartment, in the cellar, in the refrigerator, on the balcony, in the basement? After all, the sellers in the market somehow keep them.

However, prior to storage, you need to know how the fruits were collected from the trees. It is strictly forbidden to shake off fruits and collect them from the ground, because in this case they will not lie for a long time. They will most likely start to rot within a few weeks. Use ladders, stepladders, or other tools to collect the fruit so that you can very carefully remove the fruit from the tree. The skin of the fruit must remain intact and safe, therefore, the collection must be carried out in cotton gloves. It is advisable to put apples in a special basket or a plastic bucket, lined from the inside with a soft cloth or burlap.

All harvested fruits must be carefully sorted and removed to the sides of the fruits that were at least slightly damaged during the collection, have worms or any diseases. Store apples at home in winter only those that are absolutely "healthy". Whole fruits must be sorted by size - small, medium, large. As practice shows, medium-sized fruits can be stored for the longest, and large ones are more susceptible to disease.

Preparation for preserving the harvest begins at the time of harvest, adhering to the following rules:

These varieties retain their taste, aroma and vitamins for 5-8 months. Optimal conditions for the preservation of apples:

In plastic bags

Sealed packaging allows you to maintain the required moisture content inside the bags. No more than 3 kg of apples are placed in each bag. After the fruit has cooled down and the temperature inside the package is equal to that of the environment, the neck of the package should be tied tightly.

You can put a cotton pad moistened with vinegar or vodka inside. This will accelerate the production of carbon dioxide, which ensures the best preservation of the fruit.

  5. Apples will keep better in the refrigerator if you put them in a bag. The bag is half filled with fruit, after which it is hermetically tied, and several cuts are made along the bag itself. Condensation will accumulate inside, the fruits will "breathe", as a result they will not dry out and not mold.

If you see that you have begun to deteriorate quickly, you can eventually cook the jam.

If you want to keep them fresh, you can store them in the refrigerator in a special fruit compartment. But they can be saved a little like that.

You can put apples in a cardboard or wooden box, basket, inspect each apple for integrity and wrap it in paper, for example, napkins so that the apples do not come into contact with each other and do not spoil. And put it in a cool place on a balcony or loggia. But if it's cold there, you need to wrap up with a blanket and monitor their condition.
