Palm (Arecaceae)


Areca (Latin Areca) is a type genus of the Palm family, which includes more than forty species found in the humid undergrowth of tropical regions of Asia from Sri Lanka and India to the Philippines, Solomon Islands and New Guinea. The typical species of the genus is the areca catechu, or betel nut, which grows in the nature of East Africa, South China, Western Oceania, South and Southeast Asia, and the plant is cultivated throughout the tropical belt for its seeds, which have a narcotic effect: they are wrapped in leaves betel nut and chew.
